On Tuesday morning, Shireen Z., one of our 8th graders, attended the White House Science Fair where President Obama viewed the nation’s top student science fair projects. Shireen was invited to attend because her video game project, Discovery, won first place in the 2010 Videogame STEM Challenge. Congratulations, Shireen!

Simulations and Art at NC by Jordan
October 11th, 2011 · No Comments · Uncategorized
Recently in the Junior High, we went to Natures classroom. At nature’s classroom, we take care of animals, we take care of the earth, and we learn about the creatures that inhabit it. One specific thing we did was called art day and below are some photos. Also at NC, we did a simulation every single night. The simulation we usually did had to do with us being broken up into groups and there were some groups who had more privileges then the other. A specific one we did actually took place during dinner. We picked names randomly in a bucket and from that it would determine where you would sit. There was America, France, Thailand, Rwanda, and Philippines. Rwanda was the poorest. Philippines were the second poorest. Thailand was the third poorest. America was the richest and had plenty of food. France wasn’t poor but they weren’t that rich, but they weren’t in the middle either. Those who were poor had only rice to eat. Some didn’t even have bowls or silverware. They also had to sit on the ground. America and France had plenty of food, water, and their food was not just limited to rice – they had pizza, salad, etc. Later in the meal the counselors gave America the option to give the poor countries more food. It was at their discretion though. So eventually everyone ate but it really showed us how hungry people are in the other countries.

Chubby Cheese Truck!
October 6th, 2011 · No Comments · Uncategorized

On Wednesday the JH class had the opportunity to order lunch from the Chubby Cheese Truck. The owner of the truck first gave a speech about how to start a food truck, why she started hers, and she also answered questions for the robotics team about food sanitation. Then, each of the students got to order something special from the truck and have a nice picinic lunch in the covered play area. Thanks Chubby Cheese!

Our Great Debate by Zoe
September 16th, 2011 · No Comments · Uncategorized
Today in Junior High 8th graders held a debate. There were two debates; one was ‘Why the students of MMS should have recess on Athletic days’ and the other was ‘ The Neo-Nazis should have the right to free- speech even though its hate-speech to others’. In the first debate the proposition and the opposition both did a fantastic job but the judges: Sarah, Rebecca, and Shelby thought that the winner was the proposition which was ‘Why the students of MMS should have recess on athletic days’ the other winner was the opposition ‘The Neo-Nazis shouldn’t have the right to free-speech even though it may be hate-speech to others’ But in my opinion everyone won because they all did so well!

Stair Climbing in JH
September 12th, 2011 · No Comments · Uncategorized
This week in Junior High, students are stair climbing to remember 911. Fellow student, Siobhan Larsen came up with the idea of star climbing. We are doing stair climbing to remember the first responders that climbed all those flights of stairs. We are going to be doing fifty-five laps, which is going up and then down the pink stairs. Fifty-five laps should amount to one hundred and ten stories.
